Evolution of Maritime Talks

The Maritime World is my home. For over 70 years, I have lived, worked, and played near the sea, on the sea (as a Naval Medical Officer and now a cruise ship speaker), over the sea (as a Naval Flight Surgeon), and sometimes even under the sea (as a diving medicine physician).
I write stories about the Maritime World because it is what I know best. Each of my stories highlights a different aspect of the maritime world. These are stories about Maritime History, Current Events, World Affairs, International Geopolitics, and the Future of the Maritime Environment. Individual stories describe the importance of the oceans and seas to the origin and evolution of our civilization, the importance of maritime geography to current events and world affairs, and especially the relevance of the maritime world to daily life.
These stories have evolved into informal presentations that I offer to community groups, adult lifelong learning programs, and, for the past 10 years, cruise ship audiences. My talks emphasize the richness and depth of our nautical heritage, its influence on our culture and science, and its relevance and importance to the future of our world. Stories sometimes summarize the most recent thinking and writing of the world’s leaders regarding the importance of the maritime world and explore how their unique insights can give us a fresh perspective for viewing, and understanding, our modern world.
My presentation style is conversational, and my talks are designed to be both entertaining and informative. Some of my talks are intended to be just for fun. Examples include LIGHTHOUSES, SONGS OF THE SEA, and THE NAUTICAL ORIGIN OF EVERYDAY EXPRESSIONS.
When speaking on cruise ships, I organize talks into a chronologic and geographic sequence that closely parallels the ship’s itinerary. My talks complement the voyage by describing the surrounding geography, reviewing the historical importance of the region, and, when applicable, discussing current events taking place in the maritime environment around us.
